School’s back in session…or just about. Do you dread the morning craziness? Is everyone running around and into each other, trying to get out the door on time with lunch, backpack, the dog fed, breakfast eaten, and last-minute signatures? Stop the morning madness just a little bit with these easy peasy school lunch packing tricks.
The Set-Up
Make the lunch-packing task seem like fun by making it easy for your kids. Locate Mom–Approved lunch box items in fun pantry bins with easy to see & read labels. Better yet, let the kids help select the bins and create the labels! Then allow them to select the lunch box items from a selection you approve. This gives them ownership over their lunch. And, you actually know what they like to eat.
We are all picky eaters. Don’t hamper their lunch experience just because their favorite foods are different from yours. My mom LOVES tomatoes. I’m almost 50 and still think they are gross. It’s not going to change, Mom.
The Supplies
Allow kids to pick out the lunch box & containers they think are cool. Remember when your mom made you go to school with the uncool backpack, jacket, shoes or pencil box. Don’t do that to your kids. Allowing them to pick is so much cheaper than a therapist. Extra benefit: they’ll think you’re super cool.
The Timing
Everyone is super tired and brain-dead when they get home every day. Then, there are all kinds of activities to tackle before going to bed. Packing lunches seem like something to put off until tomorrow. But packing a lunch right after dinner only takes about 5 minutes. In the morning, it could cost you 20 very precious minutes. Why would you want to do this when everyone is half asleep and trying to eat breakfast? Someone’s lunch box just might end up with a cold waffle instead of a mouthwatering sandwich and cookies for lunch. Or worse yet, the dog’s breakfast!
Depending on age, kids should do this themselves with your stealthy supervision. When kids fail to complete a task, it may be because they just don’t know what to do or what tools they are supposed to use. Your kind & gentle teaching with guidance are all kids need to give them the confidence to own the job.
Try it for a week and let us know how your mornings go.

Leticia Pfeiffer
I started organizing from a very early age. As a teenager, I tried very hard to have a messy room but only ended up having messy piles that were neatly arranged. Later in life, my friends started asking me to help them organize their closets, homes, garages, etc. It's something I love to do!
Now, I have started a Professional Organizing business to do what I love to do everyday and at the same time help people take control of their lives and spaces.
