5 Ways to Find Space in Your Kitchen
October 5, 2015Organizing Q&A
October 19, 2015Years ago, I traveled with my church youth choir, singing in other churches, being hosted for the night in the homes of gracious church members, & hoping the home my friend Lesa Laird and I received would be the coolest & best. Saturday night, I had the opportunity to be on the hosting end for Mary Hardin Baylor’s One Voice an elite vocal group made up of music majors. Signing up to host seemed a good idea at the time, but it came at the end of three very full days working an estate sale. I arrived home late Saturday afternoon with weariness setting in, & there was lots to be done before the house was ready.
Brittany, front & center in the picture, and Kaylee, just to the left of Brittany, arrived to find a table full of snacks; fruit, cheese, veggies, cokes, ice cream, freshly baked cookies. There needed to be a good variety & a lot of it just in case all that singing made them hungry after their roast beef dinner. While visiting, Brittany saw a text that Briana, just to the right of Brittany, needed to move from her host’s home due to her cat allergies. Now there were three.
We ate some more, visited, cleansed Briana’s clothes of the cat, laughed, assured Kaylee stepping in to sing the solo the next day for the tenor with mono would be amazing & then set her up for a long night of rewrites on her music composition paper due Monday. When Brittany found out about my Professional Organizing business, she exclaimed that was what she wanted to do as well. We spent the rest of the night talking shop.
One Voice sang three songs in the Sunday morning service. The first, “God is All Around Us”, let us hear Brittany & Briana’s beautiful high vibrato. Kaylee’s last minute solo was the last song. A spiritual sung a cappella no less. Kaylee sang beautifully! With the service over, bragging to friends began. I don’t know if our girls were the coolest or the best, but certainly the most beautiful singers & soloist of the group vocally, physically & spiritually stayed in our home.
It’s a little silly-sounding, being so proud of three girls we hadn’t even known 24 hours. I see now why people continually open their home to host guests passing through for the night even when life is busy. It’s a little adventure in your very own home while helping others. What a perfect combination!
