NAPO Conference: What I Learned Part 2

May 13, 2013May seems to be a really busy month: May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day & every graduation & wedding known to man. Before you know it, May is over & you have nothing scheduled for the kids or for a family summer vacation. Don’t let May get away from you. Take time now to ask friends, neighbors & (why not?) strangers in the check-out line what they have lined up for summer activities. In case those people don’t have ideas, here are some inexpensive possibilities to get you going.
1. Local Library Have you been to your local library lately? It’s so easy to forget that your taxes have already paid for some amazing treasures like book clubs, story time & classes on science, nature, etc. They are always having new events for kids and adults, so check out their website for details. And it’s FREE!
2. Volunteer What a great way to spend time together as a family & give back to your community at the same time. Your local city website or church will have information on places to volunteer. If you still don’t find something to fit your needs, look around your community for organizations that are volunteer based like a local food pantry, Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. This is FREE too.
3. Parks & Recreation I remember my first ballet class from Miss Rose at the Parks & Recreation building near downtown Plano. I know it cost my parents some money to send me, but memories of my teacher & the skills it provided have lasted a lifetime. The thing about your Parks & Recreation classes/events is that they are quality for a lesser price. A great way to dip your toes in the water while having fun. Minimal cost.
4. City Parks Have you been to every park, pool, dog park or recreation center in your town? I didn’t think so. Why not visit 2-3 each month. See what they have to offer. Take a picnic lunch or just get some ice cream afterwards. Cost of ice cream – Minimal, Park – FREE!
5. Arboretum/Botanical Gardens When was the last time you saw your taxes in full bloom? This does cost a little money so if you have a large family, you might want to look into a membership that usually covers parking, etc. & gives you perks. An Arboretum is a Garden for the study of plants but presented in a beautiful way. A Botanical Gardens is just for the beauty of nature. Either way, a win/win. Some Cost.
6. Museums Most cities have several museums to choose from or have a neighboring city with museums. What a great way to see your city, know the amazing things it has to offer & learn something all at the same time. A lot of museums have classes for kids & events for the adults. The Dallas Museum of Art is offering s free level of membership this year. Free to Some Cost.
If you’ve ever been a little late to check into any of these possibilities, you’ve probably found the classes and events to be sold out. The first of May is the time to sign up before spaces close. Remember, a little effort now will save your sanity. Long about June 15th when the kids display their first attack of boredom, you’re going to thank me ….. & yourself.
