It might not seem easy to you, but a few tricks of the trade will help move you toward a tidy goal.
- Label, Label, Label Whether you have opaque bins, open bins, small bins or clear bins they all need to be clearly labeled so each child knows what is to be stored in each bin. If your children are still learning to read, add a picture which will help the learning process.
- Start Young No one is too young to start putting their things away. Once they are walking, each child can learn how to put their blanky & binky away. Then, as they mature, keep adding on responsibilities. They won’t know they have an option to not put their things away like buckling their car seat. DISCLAIMER: When they become a teenager, you might have to start all over.
- Lead & Show Lead by example not do as I say, not as I do. Kids see you leaving your “toys” wherever you finished with them. If you want them to put their things away, you will have to as well. Show them how to put away their toys. Being told, “clean up your room” can be a vague directive. Instead, be specific. Tell them, “Put Legos into the bin”. And, spending time working along side them will teach them the process.
Starting while they are young, labeling, leading & showing your kids how to put their toys away is the way to conquer clutter early & keep your sanity —at least until they are teenagers.
