There’s a new trend in journaling that is geared toward creative types…and may even entice them to improve their time management skills! It is also a great way to use some of your beautiful blank journals, and it’s called Bullet Journaling. One reason it has become so popular is that you only need a few basics to get started.
You will need:
- A blank journal
- Your favorite writing pen(s)
- Colorful markers
- Stickers and/or Washi tape
You may be asking yourself, “Why would I need another journal if I already use a paper planner or electronic calendar?” Well, here are some examples of things that people are writing in their bullet journals that may not be captured in a traditional planner or electronic calendar:
- Daily memory keeping (jot down anything particularly memorable from the day)
- Travel planning
- Daily Gratitude List
- Cleaning Schedule
- “Last-Completed” Household Routine Maintenance List
- Diet/Healthy Lifestyle Accomplishments & Goals
- “Books To Read” List
- “Movies To See” List
The sky is really the limit for documenting lists and goals…..you can literally track anything that you want to!
A blank book can be really intimidating to some, so there is now a market for bullet journaling “helpers” such as rubber stamps, special Washi tape, and planning related stickers to make things a little easier.
A suggested structure to use when you are starting your very first bullet journal is:
- Index (simply a list of all of your book sections/topics and their corresponding page numbers)
- Future Log (draw a year-long calendar for notating the big stuff)
- Custom sections/topics for ongoing life documentation (such as those listed above)
- IF YOU WILL USE THE JOURNAL AS A PLANNER, TOO… then add this fourth section to include Monthly/Daily Calendar layouts
There are some wonderful resources on the internet if you want to try this method of journaling for yourself. Here are some articles you can start with:
