“Don’t Forget to Show Love!”
June 25, 2018Kitchen Organizing 101 – Part 2
July 9, 2018I design, set up & re-organize a LOT of kitchens for clients in their new or existing homes—what I call Kitchen Organizing 101 techniques. I’ve learned these techniques from experience, classes, training & colleagues. If you are tired of hating your kitchen layout or if you’re looking for a summer project, these techniques are your key to loving your kitchen—maybe for the first time. But, don’t tell anyone that I’m sharing this top secret industry information with you.
The most important items to place first are your pots & pans because they need to live as close to your cooktop as possible. Plastic storage is the second most important item to place in your kitchen because it creates the most frustration when selecting and putting away. Placing these items first allows you to select the best options for all of these tools.
- Pots/pans always go in cabinets/drawers under/next to cooktop so place these absolutely first.
- EDIT: Let go of pots/pans that are badly damaged or you don’t like anymore.
- TRUTH: If you have pots/pans that don’t nest, they aren’t as fabulous as you think they are. Make sure your next set nests or use a cookware organizer.
- SECRET: Large stock pots can go up high (i.e. over refrigerator) since they are seldom used & large enough they are easy to grab from up high.
- Plastic Storage Containers really prefer to live in drawers and are so much easier to corral that way. Don’t have lower drawers? Use a basket to create a “drawer” in a lower cabinet & eliminate the source of some of your knee issues.
- EDIT: If a container bottom doesn’t have a lid or vice versa, let it go.
- TRUTH: Just because it was expensive & serves a really cool specific function doesn’t make it fabulous for you.
- SECRET: Nest like shapes together. Store lids standing upright – there’s a drawer organizer for that– with large stones lying down under matching bottom.
