Disorganization is Like Debt
August 20, 2012Unorganized Priorities
September 4, 2012You might think I’m writing about the getting-your-kids-out-the-door-with-all-they-need-for-the-first-day-of-school crisis you just experienced. While that is a crisis and a yearly one at that, I’m thinking of the potential one called Isaac coming across Florida today heading to Louisiana & Mississippi.
Usually, I keep a stiff upper lip & focus on dealing with the challenge, leaving out time to become upset or nervous. But Isaac is a little too much of a reminder of Katrina from seven years ago. Maybe Katrina hit closer to home since my boss at the time was from one of the hardest hit areas. I remember him loading up generators, gas for the generators, food and protection to drive to his hometown with relief for family devastated by the storm. It was a scary week. No cell reception. We didn’t even know if he would be safe when stopping for gas or if there was gas to stop for. He made it thankfully. A lot of people made it thanks to people like him and the huge relief effort.
Isaac is predicted not to be a Katrina but people are leaving just the same. The Gulf & East coasts are not the only ones who deal with natural disaster of this magnitude. California has it’s share–pick a type–and the middle part of the country has been known to kick up some dust so to speak. So are you prepared?
Do you have your essential & forever documents ready to grab-n-go at a moments notice? Do you have the necessary essentials to batten down the hatches if need be? Do you have the necessary essential items in your car if caught in an ice/snow storm or even a 100 degree day with a broken down car?
If you don’t even know where to start, your taxes have already gone to work for you. The US government has a website to help you create your emergency first aide kits. That site will guide you in collecting the kinds of copies you need to manage financially and the supplies that will let you exist until lights and water are restored and keeping them up-to-date and handy. So no matter what your disaster, even the loss of a family member, you won’t be caught without important papers, supplies to get you through the first hours & knowledge of where to turn to next. And if it seems all too much to take on, there are Professional Organizers who specialize in this emergency preparedness area.
