One of the best ways to ensure that your child’s school year starts out “on the right foot” is to make sure that his or her wardrobe is up-to-date and organized. Early morning routines are so much easier to maintain if outfits and accessories are within easy reach. Who wants to roll out of bed just to have to search high and low for a clean outfit to wear? Or hunt down the “missing shoe”? Or find a pair of socks that match?
Start out by working with each child to go through the clothes in his or her dresser. Take inventory of their underwear and socks. If needed, purchase fresh sets for the school year, and then wash, fold and put them away in the appropriate drawers. Drawer organizers can help kids keep items orderly, and here are some we love from the Container Store.
Then work your way through the hanging clothes. Make sure all pants/jeans are hanging together and shirts are together. Have them try on the ones from last year, and filter out any that are worn out or don’t fit (you can donate the “almost new” clothing to a local charity or hand them down to a younger sibling). Also check that shoes still fit properly, are in good shape and are within reach.
If you want to take your child’s wardrobe to the next level we have some solutions for you to consider. You can purchase hanging clothes organizers to make it fun and easy to store each day’s outfit on it’s own shelf.
Here is one for young children that comes already labeled for each day of the week. It can be found on Amazon.com.
For older children, basic hanging shelves work well, and can be labeled to best fit their needs. Here is one we like from the Container Store.
With organization tools like these, you can set your child up with an entirely new routine. Who knows, maybe it will even entice them to start doing their own laundry… and putting it away themselves, too.
