Summer may still feel lightyears away, but the first week of May is when you should get serious about planning it out to make the most of your precious time. We know it seems counter-intuitive to “plan out” your summer, but if you have a few goals in mind you are more likely to accomplish them rather than watch the days melt away (just like that delicious popsicle)!
Use this list to start a discussion with your family:
- Where do you want to go – decide as a family what your summer vacation will be (be sure to look for our next blog post focused on vacation planning)
- Share a list of available local camps and classes with your kids, and see what peaks their interest.
- Local libraries almost always have summer reading programs to encourage kids to read through the summer.
- Some school districts have fun summer programs to keep kids learning during their time off. Check your school district’s website for information.
- Check out your local Parks and Recreation department. It is a wonderful resource for additional camps and classes that kids love, while being quite affordable. There may even be some fun classes for the adults!
- Review registration requirements for the activities they choose, and book as soon as possible. The most popular activities always book up fast.
- What projects do you want to accomplish?
- Do you have any home projects that need to be done during the warm weather months? Schedule contractors for projects now. If you are doing DIY projects, make sure you save some vacation time to dedicate to them.
- Take an inventory of all of your seasonal summer necessitites.
- Purchase a new supply of sunscreen and bug spray for all of those outdoor plans.
- Make sure everyone in the family has a good pair of sunglasses to protect those eyes.
- Check swim gear to make sure it still fits, and that is isn’t in disrepair. Replace the items that are no longer usable.
If you are able to iron out all of these details now, you will have more time to relax and enjoy the “lazy days” of summer!
