Bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, sheets, blankets, pillows, throws, pillow cases are so beautiful when pristinely stacked on store shelves and in magazine pages. But in your linen closet they can all be completely overwhelming. The new bed and bath items sparked moments of joy in the store. But adding them to the current stack shows how ratty the old ones have become. So you purchase another set and add to the stack. Then another and another. Until laundry day means stuffing, piling, and pushing to put away the clean items.
It’s time to get to the back of the closet and eliminate the excess. Well, yes, the old items are a bit ragged and hard . . . but they’re too good to throw away, you tell yourself. Have you considered that old, ragged, hard sheets and worn & torn towels & blankets can go to your animal shelter to give those waiting on a forever home a comfy bed or nice towel at bath time? Now I’ve given you the motivation (maybe justification, if you inherited you mama’s “saving” ways) to clean out your linen closet!
The Matching Game
- Match sheet & towel sets
- Group all king sheets together, queen together & on down the line.
- Group standard pillows vs king pillows together
- Group blanket sizes together
Folding
- Per your space restriction, create the best way to fold your linens to
- Maximize your space
- Create a uniform appearance
Location, Location, Location
- Place most used items like sheets & towels at eye-level
- Place rarely used items like extra pillows & blankets up high
- Place moderately used items like throws down low
- Label shelves so everyone knows what’s a king set vs a twin set
Don’t Go Overboard…This isn’t a Cruise Ship
- You only really need a set of sheets on each bed and one in the closet.
- A blanket for summer & winter.
- A few extra pillows for guests.
Any non-linen items that don’t fit, need a new place to live either in your home or someone else’s home.
Scrutinize you linens as you sort & fold them with eyes of a guest. Do they have frayed edges? Are they faded, worn, or dingy looking? If so, maybe it’s time to let them go for a newer version. Now is a perfect time of the year to shop for linens during the White Sales.
Yes…..I just gave you permission to go shopping!

I started organizing from a very early age. As a teenager, I tried very hard to have a messy room but only ended up having messy piles that were neatly arranged. Later in life, my friends started asking me to help them organize their closets, homes, garages, etc. It's something I love to do!
Now, I have started a Professional Organizing business to do what I love to do everyday and at the same time help people take control of their lives and spaces.
